On New Year’s Eve, as people celebrate and look forward to the year ahead, several employees of the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines have learned of their termination.
The Housing Rehabilitation Programme of the previous administration ended today (31 December) under the New Democratic Party (NDP) administration, which secured 14 seats to one in the 27 November general election.
The decision has left more than 150 workers unemployed and created uncertainty for many other people, particularly those whose homes remain incomplete under the programme.
One News SVG has also received reliable information that Mr. Glen Beache, Chief Executive Officer of Invest SVG, was relieved of his duties today (31 December).
Efforts to reach Mr. Beache directly for comment were futile.
Invest SVG serves as the official investment promotion agency for St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). This government entity attracts and facilitates both local and foreign direct investment (FDI) into priority sectors such as tourism, technology, agro-processing, and financial services. Mr. Beache was at the helm of the agency since August 2023.
The media are on the lookout for similar changes as the transition period appears to be gearing up for the new administration.
The future of several employment and training programmes remains uncertain. Some workers on the Support for Education and Training (SET) programmes in various departments have yet to be informed whether their contracts will be extended or renewed.
Public statements on whether the Youth Empowerment Service (YES) programme and the ON-Site programme are yet to be made even with two ministers responsible for information in the country.
