The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has strongly condemned air strikes on the capital, Caracas, and other locations, which it attributes to the United States.
Several air strikes were reported across Venezuela early on Saturday, 3 January, targeting several sites in Caracas as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira.
In a communiqué issued early on Saturday, the government declared:
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and population in civilian and military locations in the city of Caracas, capital of the Republic, and the States of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira.
The statement further asserted:
“This act constitutes a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations, especially Articles 1 and 2, which enshrine the respect for the sovereignty, the legal equality of States, and the prohibition of the use of force.”
“Such an aggression threatens international peace and stability, specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean, and puts the lives of millions of people at serious risk.”
The Venezuelan government also accused the US of seeking to seize the country’s strategic resources, particularly oil and minerals, to undermine its political independence, insisting: “They will not succeed.”
The strikes follow months of US military build-up and operations in the Caribbean Sea, including attacks on vessels designated by the US as involved in narcotrafficking. They also come amid longstanding US efforts, including a bounty on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the recent seizure of several sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers.
International media reports suggest that President Maduro may have been captured by US forces, though the government’s communiqué, issued to regional media early on Saturday morning, makes no mention of any such event.
“The Bolivarian Government calls on all social and political forces in the country to activate mobilization plans and repudiate this imperialist attack. The people of Venezuela and their Bolivarian National Armed Forces, in perfect popular-military-police fusion, are deployed to guarantee sovereignty and peace,” the Communique said.
“Simultaneously, Bolivarian Diplomacy of Peace will file the corresponding complaints with the UN Security Council, the Secretary-General of that United Nations, CELAC, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), demanding the condemnation and accountability of the U.S. government,” the document added.
The Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM met very early on 3 January following reports of military action in Venezuela, CARICOM announced.
CARICOM said it is actively monitoring the situation which is of grave concern to the Region with possible implications for neighbouring countries. CARICOM will continue to update the people of the Region as more information is received.
We will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as details emerge from authoritative sources.
