PM Dr Friday “Our Nation Remains in Good Hands”

Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday has assured Vincentians that “our nation remains in good hands” as the country bid farewell to outgoing Governor General Dame Susan Dougan and welcomed His Excellency Stanley John as the new Head of State. 

Speaking at the official swearing-in ceremony, Dr. Friday praised Dame Susan for her “enduring and outstanding” service to the nation. He described her tenure as marked by dignity and commitment, noting that “a grateful nation says farewell” as she embarks on a new chapter of her life. 

Turning to the new Governor General, Dr. Friday highlighted Mr Stanley’s distinguished career as a barrister, solicitor, and King’s Counsel, as well as his contributions to national politics. “He gave service to many in our courts, representing vigorously and in keeping with the highest standards of our noble profession, always with dignity and professionalism,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr. Friday emphasized his personal respect and admiration for Mr Stanley, calling him a “longstanding friend” whose generosity and wisdom have benefitted many. “It is my distinct honor to have him as my Head of State,” he declared. 

The Prime Minister underscored the significance of Mr Stanley’s appointment as His Majesty’s representative, describing him as “a son of the soil whose love of country is second to none.” He expressed confidence that the new Governor General would serve “honourably and faithfully” in his new role. 

Dr. Friday also linked the transition in leadership to the broader national context, noting that the country had recently elected a new government with a clear mandate to deliver change and progress. “We are at the beginning of a new year. Beginnings always bring hope. It is for us to make the best of that hope and to embrace the immense possibilities it lays before us,” he said. 

The Prime Minister pledged to govern “with respect for all and with the grace of God Almighty, never to yield no matter the challenge.” He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to unity and progress, stating that the strength and support of the people would enable his government “to do great things.” 

The ceremony marked a historic moment of continuity and renewal in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as one Governor General was honored for her service and another entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the nation forward.
