Her Excellency Dame Susan Dougan delivered her final address at Government House, marking the end of her historic tenure as the first woman to serve as Governor General of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. “I will say welcome to Government house for the last” she said as she addressed the gathering at Government house.
Dame Susan extended appreciation to national leaders and institutions, including heads of religious denominations, members of the diplomatic corps, and specially invited guests.
Mr. Enville Williams, Commissioner of Police, and the Constabulary were praised for their loyal protection throughout her service. Deputy Governor General, Mrs. Dawn Smith, was recognized for going “beyond the call of duty” to ensure smooth operations at Government House. Staff, gardeners, and security personnel were thanked for their discipline and dedication, which she described as vital to the smooth functioning of the office.

Turning to her successor, Dame Susan warmly welcomed Stanley Kendrick “Stalky” John KC, describing him as a neighbour and trusted friend. She highlighted his distinguished career as a legal practitioner, his service as senator and Member of Parliament, and his achievement of passing the English Bar.
She praised his reputation as a family man and well loved in the community. She expressed confidence that he will lead with patience, humility, good judgment, and love for the common good, assuring him of her full support.
Dame Susan reflected on the challenges and milestones of her service, including overseeing two national elections, navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, responding to a volcanic eruption, and witnessing the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III. She described her journey as “quite an adventure” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation in such a pivotal role.
