Two people narrowly escaped serious injury after being attacked by pitbull dogs in the South Leeward community of Clare Valley on 7 January.

A woman walking along the public road was reportedly set upon by the dogs, which emerged from a nearby property. The gate of the property was reportedly open and the dogs were able to come out on the public road.

An ex-police officer, hearing her cries for help, rushed to her aid but was quickly overwhelmed by the two animals.

Neighbours in the area then intervened, managing to halt the vicious attack.

One News SVG contacted one of the victims, who said they remained traumatised and did not wish to comment publicly at this time. Both individuals sustained wounds that are receiving medical treatment.

The incident has alarmed residents, particularly those with children and others whose work requires them to move around the community.

In 2008, domestic worker, Althea Cato, 46, was killed by her employer’s four dogs in Cane End, according to police reports.

In the interest of public safety, this news outlet decided to carry this story about the Clare Valley dog attack as owners of potentially dangerous dogs are being urged to secure them properly. People are also being encourage, nationwide, to remain vigilant.

In 2024, St. Vincent and the Grenadines passed a Dogs Bill, though its primary focus was regulating dogs on beaches.

Here is a November 2024 report from the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC Radio) on the law:

Legislation is now in place to crack down on dogs on certain beaches. This, following the passage of the Dogs Bill in Parliament on Thursday, 28th November 2024.
In tabling the Bill, the then Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Saboto Caesar said the Bill provides for the care and control of dogs and related matters.

“There are some persons who own dogs and when they go to the beach, they would take the dog to the beach, and it is a nuisance. We must bring a stop to this and in Clause Seven (7) Beach Prohibition, the Minister by order published in the Gazette will list some beaches where you can and cannot take dogs, No Dogs Allowed. We are well aware, we are seeing a significant expansion in persons going to the beaches more, we have more Tourists in the country our room stock is going up and we have to be very, very careful.”

Then Minister Caesar outlined several other aspects of the Dogs Bill.

“A list of breeds are to be muzzled except if you have it in your vehicle or property. There are certain breeds that we are going to list which if you have these dogs in the public that they must be muzzled. Clause Nine (9) Offenses where a dog attacks a person or animal and there is an interesting defense here in Clause Nine (9). If the attack occured as a result of the dog been teased, abused, attacked or otherwise provoked that can be a defense,” the Minister said, as reported by NBC Radio in November 2024.
