The President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF), Mr. Otashie Spring, has unveiled a bold vision for the future of Vincentian football, the creation of a “football league economy” designed to make the sport financially independent and sustainable.
Spring made the announcement during a press conference highlighting two major milestones on the national football calendar the launch of the Vincy Soccer Premier League (VSPL) and St. Vincent’s hosting of the CONCACAF U17 Boys World Cup Qualifiers in the Grenadines.
Spring explained that while international partners provide support, their contributions are not sufficient to meet the rapid demands of football development.

“What we get from our global partners is not adequate enough to develop the sport at the rate at which football is really demanding,” Spring said. “This league economy enables us with the independence to go out and generate our own funds to help develop the sport.”
He stressed that football is evolving so quickly that administrations must adapt or risk being left behind. The proposed football league economy would allow SVGFF to generate revenue locally, reinvest in infrastructure, and sustain growth without over reliance on external funding.
The VSPL, formerly introduced as the Vinci Semi-Pro League, is now positioned as the country’s flagship domestic competition. It will feature Tier 1 clubs in a 90-game season, supported by government backing and new management structures.
Spring explained that the league is designed not only to raise the standard of local football but also to serve as a pathway for talent development, Referees, management teams, and marketing strategies are being upgraded to ensure the competition is delivered at a level “like never before.”

In addition to the VSPL, SVG will host the CONCACAF U17 Boys World Cup Qualifiers, welcoming teams from the United States, Dominican Republic, St. Kitts & Nevis, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
Spring noted that being awarded hosting rights is a vote of confidence from CONCACAF in the SVGFF’s evolving administration. “It speaks volumes to the confidence our CONCACAF brothers have in this federation and by extension the country,” he stated.
