The University of the West Indies (UWI) has secured a place among the top 3.6 percent of universities worldwide, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

The 2026 rankings assessed more than 33,000 universities and higher education institutions, with only 2,191 from 115 countries meeting the criteria for evaluation. UWI’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook earned it a position in the upper tier of global academia.

UWI Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles welcomed the recognition, noting that the achievement reflects the university’s commitment to advancing Caribbean development while competing on the world stage. Regional leaders also praised the milestone, emphasizing UWI’s role in strengthening education, research, and innovation across the Caribbean.

Founded in 1948, UWI has grown into a multi-campus institution serving students across the region. Its consistent rise in global rankings highlights investments in research, international collaboration, and programs tailored to address pressing issues such as climate resilience, economic transformation, and public health.

This latest ranking reinforces UWI’s reputation as a world-class institution rooted in Caribbean identity, and is expected to boost its visibility, attract new partnerships, and expand opportunities for students and faculty.
