Prime Minister Mia Mottley has once again steered the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) to a resounding victory, winning all 30 seats in the February 11 general election. This marks the third consecutive clean sweep for the BLP, cementing Mottley’s dominance in Barbadian politics since first taking office in 2018.
The election, called a year ahead of schedule, saw Mottley comfortably retain her St. Michael Northeast seat. The biggest upset came in St. John, where Democratic Labour Party (DLP) leader Ralph Thorne who had previously crossed the floor after being elected on a BLP ticket was defeated by the BLP’s Charles Griffith.
The final seat to be declared, St. Michael Northwest, underscored the intensity of the contest. A close battle between DLP candidate Ryan Walters and BLP incumbent Neil Rowe stretched into the early hours of Thursday morning before Rowe was confirmed the winner.
Six political parties and several independents contested the election, but none managed to break the BLP’s stranglehold. The scale of the victory highlights both the weakness of the opposition and the enduring appeal of Mottley’s leadership, which has been marked by her strong regional presence and international advocacy on climate change and debt reform.
In celebration of the landslide, Mottley declared Friday a public holiday, giving Barbadians a day to mark what is now a historic political achievement: three consecutive elections with a complete sweep of the House of Assembly.
