A student was beaten and left bloodied at a secondary school in Kingstown, allegedly over his own money, raising concerns over the lack of robust action against school violence in the nation’s schools.
Reports indicate that the victim’s money fell from his pocket, after which another male student picked it up. The victim asked the other student to return the money he had picked up, but the request was refused.
The owner of the money then relented, telling the other student to spend some of it and return the change. However, when the victim approached to collect the change, the perpetrator refused again.
He then struck the victim in the face with a drum. Teachers reportedly tried restraining the perpetrator to no great avail.
The victim required hospital treatment for the laceration, which necessitated several stitches. He also suffers from a medical condition that renders head trauma particularly problematic, sometimes requiring evacuation from the country for specialised care.
One News SVG understands that the school is addressing the issue as the safety of the child and other students comes into play. The matter is also being reported to the police.
This incident follows the arrest and charging of a teenager for wounding after another teen, whom she is accused of stabbing in 2024 outside a school on the Leeward side, died in hospital after 16 months battling complications from the attack.
It also comes amid growing calls from parents and students for tougher measures to combat bullying and violence in the nation’s schools.
