St. Mary’s RC Takes the Crown in KCCU Quiz Championship

St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School captured the championship title at the annual Kingstown Co-operative Credit Union (KCCU) School Quiz finals, held at the NIS Conference Room in Kingstown on March 18, 2026, amassing an impressive total of 4,850 points. The winners, Enzo Roban and Jaca Francis, are both Grade 6 students, highlighting the strong performance of the school’s senior cohort.

The six finalists were St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School, New Grounds Primary School, Kingstown Preparatory School, Lowmans Windward Anglican Primary School, Richland Park Government School, and Bequia Anglican Primary School.

St. Mary’s delivered a standout performance across all quiz segments, including multiple choice, closed-ended questions, reading comprehension, and the high-energy buzzer round. For the top three schools, the top student and the school each received a trophy, while the substitute student in the final round received a gold medal.

As the first-place winner, St. Mary’s also secured $2,000 in cash, with $500 allocated to the teacher guide, along with a goodie bag courtesy of JoChé Moments. The winning student walked away with the latest iPad, complete with case, keypad, and Apple Pen, along with well-earned recognition in the media.

New Grounds Primary School claimed second place with a strong showing of 3,450 points. The school received a cash prize of $1,000, with $250 allocated to the teacher guide, who also received a goodie bag courtesy of JoChé Moments. The top student was awarded a laptop, along with a mouse pad and laptop bag.

Kingstown Preparatory School secured third place with 3,100 points. The school received a cash prize of $500, with $150 allocated to the teacher guide, who also received a goodie bag from JoChé Moments. The top student was awarded a Samsung tablet with a case and keyboard.

Special awards also highlighted standout individual performances. The top student from Bequia Seventh-day Adventist School was recognised for demonstrating exceptional knowledge of KCCU, while the substitute student from Lowmans Windward Anglican Primary School earned the Speed Boss title for the fastest response in the buzzer round. Both students received a gold medal and a phone, courtesy of KCCU. Additional awards were also presented for top performances in the preliminary and semifinal rounds.

One News SVG spoke with the teacher guide for St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School, Mrs. Cherrodawn McDonald Browne, who shared that students prepared using past papers, after-school sessions, and study materials provided by KCCU on the institution’s content and history. Top student Enzo Roban and substitute Jaca Francis expressed pride in their performance, noting that they were happy and satisfied with their achievement.

All students participating in the final round, including both top and substitute students, received a case of Vitamalt, compliments of St. Vincent Brewery Ltd.

The remaining placements were as follows: fourth place, Richland Park Government School; fifth place, Lowmans Windward Anglican Primary School; and sixth place, Bequia Anglican Primary School. For these schools, the top student received a trophy, the substitute student received a gold medal, and the school received a plaque.

The KCCU Annual School Quiz commenced on February 20, 2026, beginning with 38 registered schools, including participants from Bequia and Canouan. Schools were divided into seven groups, with 10 advancing to the semifinals and ultimately six qualifying for the final round.

The competition has been held annually since the 1990s and continues to play a vital role in strengthening students’ knowledge, critical thinking skills, and overall academic development. The event continues to serve as a platform for fostering academic excellence and encouraging healthy competition among primary school students across SVG.
