Former Senator Luke Browne has pushed back against remarks made by current representative Fitz Bramble about the Roseau Recreational Park, accusing him of dishonesty and misrepresentation.

In a statement titled “Fitz Bramble needs to tell the Truth about the Roseau Recreational Park”, Browne said Bramble’s comments on Hot 97 radio were “at variance with the truth” and reflected “a great degree of cognitive dissonance.”

Bramble had told listeners that Browne referred to the facility as “Luke’s Playground” and had made arrangements with businesspeople to erect two structures used as a bar and restaurant. He said the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) later took control, dismantled the shops after reports of “nefarious activities,” and set up a community management team.

“Lottery came in. They took over. We established a community management group, they broke down the shops because apparently there were a lot of nefarious activities happening there… disturbing the community,” Bramble said.

But Browne rejected those claims, insisting the official name of the facility is the Roseau Recreational Park and that he never exercised personal control over it.

“I have never called or described it as my playground. We literally converted the facility from a garbage dump to an award-winning garden,” Browne wrote. “This was a product of our labour of love for the people of Roseau, East Kingstown and SVG.”  Browne detailed the extensive work he and community members undertook to develop the park: clearing debris, levelling the ground, delivering truckloads of topsoil, transplanting grass, installing benches and tables, and even providing Wi-Fi in partnership with FLOW. He said he personally paid caretakers for years before government support was arranged.

He also disputed Bramble’s assertion that the NLA owns the park, saying a community-based management committee was already in place before the New Democratic Party came to office.

“The children and people of Roseau always had access to the park. The gates were always open. These days the gates are closed,” Browne noted.

Browne accused Bramble of ordering the demolition of the shops “for political reasons” and of using allegations of “nefarious activities” as a pretext.

“Mr. Bramble ordered the demolition of the shops for political reasons and to exercise authority as if to say ‘there’s a new sheriff in town.’ He had no regard for the welfare of the persons who were affected by it,” Browne said.
