A man was shot at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in St Vincent last night, allegedly by police.

Police confirmed the incident occurred on Friday, March 20, 2026, on the hospital compound.

Preliminary reports indicate the man, identified as Louie Mercury from Redemption Sharpes, was allegedly armed, prompting an alert. Officers approached him to remove him from the premises, but an altercation ensued, ending with him sustaining gunshot wounds.

Mercury is now a patient at the same hospital where the shooting took place.

The reason Mr. Mercury was on the hospital compound last night is currently unclear, but an investigation is pending.

One News SVG will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates.

Hospital security has been breached several times in the past by armed intruders targeting specific patients.

For instance, on March 19, 2024, an unidentified individual evaded security, entered the male surgical ward, and discharged a firearm twice. In that case, the intruder was targeting a specific patient.
