Kingstown, St. Vincent (ONE NEWS SVG) – Veteran female radio broadcaster and resident of Sandy Bay, North Windward, Veronica ‘Lady M’ Hoyte said she and some other residents of Sandy Bay could not sleep last night.
Hoyte said the announcement yesterday about the effusive eruption of the La Soufriere volcano brought some anxiety but much worse was the amount of social media misinformation about the situation.
“I actually had to turn off my phone last night,” she said, because of the number of phone calls about the volcano exploding which was not true.
Sandy Bay is one of the areas in the red zone and is near the volcano.
Hoyte said she is appealing to persons to stop the fear-mongering and to trust in the Lord at this time.
“It’s about being responsible. It’s already a period of heightened anxiety and spreading false information about the situation only creates an emotional rollercoaster for persons living over the river”.
Hoyte said she already packed her family’s important documents and has put together a family emergency plan.
She said persons in the community feel strong and confident and are not as worried at this time.
She is urging persons to remain calm and responsible and to rely on the authorities for official information.
