Kingstown, St. Vincent: The La Soufriere volcano erupted explosively on Friday sending hot materials miles in the sky.

According to the Seismic Research Center of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus, “as of 8:41 am this morning April 9, 2021 an explosive eruption began at the La Soufrière volcano in St. Vincent”.

“This a culmination of the seismic activity that began on April 8. The eruption is ongoing and more information will be shared as things progress,” the center added.

The Alert Level was changed to Red on Thursday and a mandatory evacuation notice was issued for premises in the Red Zones located in the northeast and northwest of mainland St. Vincent.

Thousands of evacuees are currently in shelters but many were left behind in Thursday due to lack of sufficient transportation.

Meanwhile, cruise ships for Royal Caribbean have arrived to help persons move to neighboring islands for safety.
