Vincentian runner shines at 2022 Jamaica Champs

Nineteen year old Vincentian Athlete Handal Roban came in 2nd today in the boys 800 metres at the 2022 ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Athletic Championships at the National Stadium in Jamaica.

Honourary Consul for St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Jamaica June Pamela Barbour conveyed the information to One News SVG. 

Barbour said: “He (Roban) has been doing very well in the past months. He was good in the past few years, but is now positioning himself and lifting his game.” 

Roban is one of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ top track and field athletes, who specialises in the 800m. He is the all-time St Vincent and the Grenadines record holder for the 800m, with a clocking of 1:48.37, achieved at the World Athletics Junior Championships in Nairobi, Kenya in August, 2021.

 Roban has several records in his name at the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships and also medalled at the Junior Carifta Games on two occasions, including a gold, as well as three medals – gold, silver and bronze, at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Under-20 and Under-18 championships.

Roban, representing Jamaica College, is also scheduled to run in the 4×400 metres at Champs later this evening.

Today is the final day of the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Athletic Championships in Jamaica. 

The Championships feature students/athletes  from high schools across Jamaica.
