Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has written a letter to St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Prime Minister – Dr. Ralph Gonsalves ahead of a high-level December 14 meeting.

The December 14 meeting will be held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to facilitate face-to-face talks between President Maduro and Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali regarding the ongoing Essequibo border dispute between the two South American nations.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Prime Minister – Dr. Ralph Gonsalves invited both leaders to hold the meeting in this country’s capacity as the Pro Tempore President of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States – CELAC.

In his letter dated December 11, 2023, President Maduro said: “I welcome your initiative, in the hope that it will be a starting point to resume direct talks between Venezuela and Guyana, which have been disrupted in recent years by a series of actions contrary to the spirit of the Geneva Agreement itself”.

“Dear Ralph, this meeting will be precisely an opportunity for us to clear up the elements that have aggravated the dispute in recent years. In addition to the above-mentioned unilateral imposition, / would like to note the arrogant and illegal attitude of the U.S. oil transnational Exxon Mobil, which has been the recipient of oil concessions in a maritime area yet to be delimited, in flagrant contravention of International Law,” Mr Maduro said.

He said he is “fully committed to this dialogue”.
