As the 2025 general election campaign intensifies, the New Democratic Party’s (NDP) Central Kingstown representative Major St. Clair Leacock has raised alarm over the escalating destruction of political billboards and posters across constituencies and parties, calling for a joint appeal to “political maturity and hygiene.”

Speaking on the New Times Program in the wake of a meeting between party officials and the National Monitoring and Consultative Mechanism (NMCM) a civic oversight body operating under the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Christian Council the MP confirmed that NDP’s Daniel Cummings represented the party in discussions aimed at reinforcing the Code of Ethical Political Conduct.

“We’ve seen deliberate removal of our posters in Central Kingstown, including in Green Hill, even on the very night of a political meeting,” the MP stated. “It’s a soft provocation of a high order.”

The representative cited video evidence of similar incidents in South Central Windward and other areas, alleging that billboards and posters have been torn down or defaced by political opponents. While condemning the acts, he emphasized that the NDP is not retaliating and has instructed supporters to uphold the principles of the Code.

“We are not encouraging our supporters to deface anyone’s material. But let’s be clear we are monitoring this closely. Our party leader, our general secretary, and our executives are all paying attention.” The MP called for mutual respect andnoninterference with legally placed campaign materials, urging all parties to “leave the billboards in peace” and focus on substantive engagement with voters.

“A war on billboards does no good to either side. What we need is political maturity, not provocation.”

The remarks come as the NMCM and Christian Council continue to monitor campaign conduct under the Code signed by all major parties on November 4. The Code explicitly prohibits the defacing or removal of opponents’ materials and encourages peaceful, issue based campaigning.
