A free transportation programme, called the Mobile Vincentian Empowerment Service (MOVE), was launched earlier today at a ceremony in Kingstown.

The MOVE programme aims to provide safe, dignified and cost-free transportation for persons with disabilities and elderly individuals facing mobility or accessibility barriers as well as those with health challenges.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of National Mobilisation Keisal Peters said there is a need for a national transport service to assist the vulnerable population requiring support, whether it be for work, medical appointments, business or social events.

Minister Peters reminded the public that this service is only provided to persons with disabilities, and service hours will be from Mondays to Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

She noted that the programme will ease the burden on the most vulnerable citizens while allowing them to receive healthcare in a dignified manner.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Mobilisation, Merissa Finch-Burke, said that this is not just a transportation service but a means of empowerment and support.

Dialysis patients will also have the use of the MOVE vehicles. It was noted that the MOVE initiative forms part of a broader social protection strategy that recognises the intersecting challenges of health, mobility and economic vulnerability, particularly for those managing chronic conditions such as kidney disease.

In addition to dialysis patients, it will support thousands of elderly and disabled persons across St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Currently, 71 patients are accessing dialysis treatment, including five from Bequia, at the Modern Medical and Diagnostic Centre in Georgetown.

The launch was done in collaboration with and with support from the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the Government of Japan, who partnered with the Ministry of National Mobilisation.
