Large Language Models (LLMs) and other neural networks, which are changing the way we write, interact with our phones and computers, get work done, code, search, and generally live our lives daily.
From a technical standpoint, what is going on inside an LLM? How can we use LLMs programmatically? This course will cover these questions and related topics.
The course will explore neural networks and how they work. Participants will learn about tokenizers, which break text into smaller pieces for processing, different layers, and outputs, the steps by which these models generate results.

From the course, participants will also learn about training and evaluating neural networks; using language models, including Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) and Agents, which are ways to make AI more practical and responsive; and hosting and serving Small Language Models (SLMs), giving hands-on experience with deploying AI systems.
The course will be held over four Saturdays, with 1.5 to 2-hour online sessions. It will start with an introductory Q&A session and will run from late January to late February 2026.
The course is open to those with some background in Computer Science, though interested persons can still attend the introductory session for more details. Participants will need a computer with a stable internet connection.
The cost for the course is EC $50.00, and attendees will also need API keys from LLM providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic. The cost of API usage will depend on how much they use the service.

The course will be led by a Vincentian Machine Learning Scientist/Engineer who has worked in FinTech companies in London in AI roles for over five years, with a PhD in Natural Language Processing from Cambridge University, as well as Masters and Undergraduate degrees in Computer Science from UWI Cave Hill. At home, the instructor has worked with Community College as a Software Engineer and Lecturer.
