Marketing and Communication Manager of the Bank of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (BOSVG), Patricia John, told UK-based Vincentians during Invest SVG’s “Home Is Where the Heart Is” diaspora tour that the bank has made financial education a national priority after St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded the lowest scores in the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank’s 2022-2023 Financial Literacy and Inclusion Survey.
John explained that the survey revealed significant gaps in financial knowledge, behaviour, and attitudes among Vincentians, with SVG scoring the lowest in the region.
The survey revealed SVG scored 11.7 out of 20 (58.5%), with weak results in knowledge, behaviour, and attitudes. Only 14.5% of respondents met the minimum benchmark for financial attitudes, while product awareness and digital payment usage also trailed the region.
In response, BOSVG launched a comprehensive educational drive beginning in schools, teaching fourth form students and their teachers the fundamentals of budgeting, income management, investing, and retirement planning. The initiative later expanded to business houses, creating what John described as a ripple effect of empowerment across the country.
That effort earned BOSVG recognition from the central bank, which named it Bank of the Year 2025 for financial education and empowerment. John said the award was not just a milestone for the institution but a moment of pride for every Vincentian who believes knowledge is the key to financial freedom.
“The survey showed us where we were weakest, and we chose to act,” she told the diaspora audience. “Empowerment is only the beginning. Knowledge gives us confidence, and confidence opens the door to opportunity.”
The Bank of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (BOSVG) is a key partner in Invest SVG’s diaspora investment tour “Home Is Where the Heart Is”, which begins on April 5, 2025. The tour will take place in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, connecting Vincentians abroad with investment opportunities and BOSVG’s financial services.
