Fisherman’s Day 2026 activities officially kick off today with a fish product exhibition, marking the start of a month-long programme leading up to the 49th anniversary of Fisherman’s Day in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The exhibition forms part of the official launch of this year’s celebrations, which will be held under the theme “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future” and the slogan “Healthy Fish, Tasty Dish.”

Senior Fisheries Officer in the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine and Land Conservation and Climate Resilience, Ferique Shotte, said this year’s activities are designed to highlight the enduring contribution of the fishing community.

In an interview with the Agency for Public Information (API), Shotte explained that the launch will feature displays of local fish and value-added products, giving producers an opportunity to showcase their work while also allowing the public to engage more closely with the fisheries sector.

Fisherman’s Day 2026 will include a packed calendar of events across the island, ranging from community-based activities such as Fish Fest in Barrouallie, to competitions and educational programmes focused on fish safety, quality, and best practices in selecting fresh fish.

“We are going to be talking to you about safety when it comes to fish… We’re going to tell you what sort of fish to buy, where to get your fish… we want you to buy healthy fish,” Shotte said.

Among the scheduled events is a male and female filleting competition set for Friday, May 15, at the Kingstown Fish Market, where participants will be tested on speed and precision in fish preparation.

Technical vocational institutes across the country will also participate in a cooking competition scheduled for May 18–19, showcasing fish-based dishes as well as sea moss drinks.

Several fishing co-operatives are expected to take part in the month-long activities, including the Goodwill Fishermen’s Co-operative Society Ltd, which will host a series of community engagements.

These include an operation beach cleanup at Lowmans Bay on May 16, church services in participating communities on May 17, a radio talk show on May 18, and a safety lecture on May 19 hosted by the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO). A fun day activity featuring food, games, and entertainment is also planned for May 23, while a health day will be held at the Kingstown Fish Market on May 28, including blood pressure and sugar screenings.

Fisherman’s Day 2026 will be officially observed on May 25 (Whit Monday), marking the 49th anniversary of the event in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Winners of this year’s competitions will receive cash prizes, replacing the traditional engine awards. The fisherman who records the heaviest catch in either Class 1 or Class 2 will be crowned Fisherman of the Year.
