Voters in Antigua and Barbuda have widened the mandate of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) with a landslide victory in the April 30 general election.

The Gaston Browne-led ABLP secured 15 of the country’s 17 seats in Parliament, preliminary results show.

The victory is larger than the one secured in the January 18, 2023, general election where the ALP won nine of the 17 seats.

The results mean that only Jamale Pringle, the United Progressive Party (UPP) leader, has won his seat for the main opposition, and the candidate for the Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) has retained his seat. Pringle’s party has been marked by infighting and defections, with five of its members joining the ABLP before the elections.

Browne addressed party supporters early Friday saying: “You have spoken, you have spoken clearly. You have indicated that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour party (ABLP) is the best institution to run this country,” according to the Guardian.

During an April 7 rally announcing the snap election Prime Minister Gaston Browne promised strength, stability, more jobs, improved roads and infrastructure, more housing, and better access to services.
