Home gardeners in St Vincent and the Grenadines will gather in Layou on Wednesday to share their experiences, challenges and produce as part of a community food and nutrition showcase hosted by Richmond Vale Academy.

The event will take place at the Resource and Learning Center in Layou from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will bring together ecological home gardeners who have been involved in backyard food production initiatives over the past several years.

Participants are expected to share how backyard gardening and small-scale poultry production have contributed to improving access to fresh food, strengthening household food security, and building community knowledge around sustainable agriculture. There will also be produce for sale and small refreshments available.

Representatives from partner organisations, including the University of the West Indies and the University of Exeter, are also expected to attend. They will present research focused on improving nutrition and food security across the Caribbean.

Organisers say the showcase comes at a time when rising food prices and growing concerns about nutrition have highlighted the importance of local food production and household food security.

Members of the public are invited to attend the event, which will offer an opportunity to engage with community gardeners and learn from their experiences.

The event forms part of the Global Community Food for Human Nutrition and Planetary Health in Small Islands (Global CFaH) project, an international research initiative aimed at improving household food security and nutrition through agroecological, community-based food production.

The project is co-led by the University of the West Indies and the University of Exeter and is funded by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research. It has been implemented in St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, Fiji and the Philippines in partnership with local organisations, including Richmond Vale Academy.

The initiative has supported households in St Vincent and the Grenadines to establish backyard gardens and small-scale poultry systems aimed at improving access to locally grown food, dietary diversity, and overall nutrition.
