Finding a reliable plumber, taxi operator, tutor or beautician in St Vincent and the Grenadines often depends on word of mouth. A new locally developed online platform is seeking to change that by providing a centralised directory designed to help users find and assess businesses and service providers more easily.

The platform, called VincyPros, was created by Vincentian cybersecurity professional Osreah Bowens, who works with the Information Technology Services Department and holds a Master’s degree in Cybersecurity.

Bowens said the idea emerged from a common challenge faced by many Vincentians: knowing where to find legitimate service providers and determining who can be trusted.

“I wanted an easier way for people to find services in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” Bowens told One News SVG. “Whether you need a taxi, plumber, electrician, tutor, beautician or another service, it can sometimes be difficult to know who to contact or who to trust.”

According to Bowens, VincyPros serves as a free online directory where businesses and independent service providers can create profiles showcasing their services, contact information, locations, operating hours, photographs and social media links.
Users can search across a wide range of categories, including tradesmen, tutors, mechanics, photographers, cleaners, hairdressers, barbers, tour guides, music teachers and other professionals.

A key feature of the platform is its emphasis on trust and accountability.

Drawing on her cybersecurity background, Bowens said user safety was a central consideration throughout the platform’s development.

“From the beginning, I wanted the site to be useful, but also safe for users and businesses,” she explained.

Measures include secure hosting, account protection systems, access controls and safeguards designed to protect user information. The platform also incorporates a business verification process intended to help users distinguish between verified providers and unverified listings.

Under the verification system, businesses may be reviewed by platform staff, who assess information such as business names, contact details, locations and services offered. Businesses that successfully complete the process can receive a verification badge displayed on their profile.

Bowens said the feature is designed to give users greater confidence when selecting a service provider.

“Verification gives consumers an additional level of assurance that the information provided has been checked,” she said.

The platform also allows customers to leave reviews based on their experiences, while badges highlighting verified, trusted or highly rated businesses are intended to help users make more informed decisions.

As concerns about online scams and fraudulent service providers continue to grow globally, Bowens believes greater transparency can help reduce risks for consumers.

“Instead of relying only on word of mouth or random social media posts, users can view business profiles, read reviews and see whether a provider has been verified,” she said.

She noted, however, that the platform is not intended to guarantee the quality of every service provider but rather to equip users with more information before making a decision.

To further strengthen accountability, VincyPros includes a reporting system that allows users and businesses to flag suspicious activity, inaccurate information, fake listings, unfair reviews or other concerns for investigation by platform administrators.

“It is all about protecting the user experience,” Bowens said.

Beyond helping consumers, the platform is also aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs and small businesses, many of which may not have dedicated websites or strong online visibility.
Bowens said VincyPros offers businesses a free way to establish a professional online presence and potentially reach a wider audience.

Looking ahead, she hopes the platform will become a trusted resource not only for residents but also for Vincentians living overseas and visitors seeking services while in the country.

With major events such as Vincy Mas attracting thousands of visitors annually, Bowens believes the platform could help connect travellers with local businesses ranging from transportation providers and beauty professionals to tour operators and entertainment services.

“My vision is for VincyPros to become a trusted place where people can easily find services and businesses in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” she said. “It is about making local services easier to find, helping businesses grow, and giving people a safer and more trusted way to connect.”
