Prime Minister Dr. Godwin Friday has extended heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the Government and people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela following a devastating earthquake that has reportedly claimed at least 164 lives, with authorities warning that the death toll could rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

In a social media post issued on behalf of the Government and people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Friday said the country was “deeply saddened” by news of the disaster and stood firmly with Venezuela during what he described as a profoundly difficult time.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that has struck Venezuela,” Prime Minister Friday said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, and with all those who have been injured or displaced.”

He added that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines recognises the immense challenges faced by nations struck by natural disasters, drawing on the country’s own recent experiences with volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

“We in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are very much aware of the terrible, devastating impact that natural disasters can have on the lives in a country,” he said. “During such times of crisis, it is critically important that friends stand by you.”

The Prime Minister also highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, noting Venezuela’s past support for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines during times of hardship.

“In our times of crisis, Venezuela has stood by us, and we reach out with hearts and minds to the people of Venezuela, letting them know that we stand with them,” he stated.

He further expressed hope for a swift and effective recovery effort as emergency teams continue their work on the ground.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you,” he said. “We trust that the recovery will be speedy, that lives that are in jeopardy now will be saved, and that the process of recovery will be quick and complete. May God bless you.”

Regional leaders across the Caribbean have also been monitoring developments closely as Venezuela continues large-scale emergency response operations in affected areas.
