Like every Vincentian, I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Police Constable Kenrick Scott. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, friends, and his colleagues within the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force. No family should have to endure such a loss.
Since the news broke, I have seen countless comments, theories, and opinions circulating online. I want to begin by saying something I believe is important. As Facebook commentator Kyle Greaves rightly pointed out, we are not investigators. None of us were present, and none of us should pretend to know exactly what happened. It would be irresponsible to accuse any individual or suggest conclusions without evidence.
However, being responsible does not mean remaining silent. It also does not mean that citizens should ignore questions that naturally arise when a death occurs under circumstances that appear a bit strange.
If the alleged photograph currently circulating on social media is indeed an accurate reflection of the scene, then I believe the public is justified in asking questions. Across social media, I have consistently seen two questions repeated more than any others: Why is the firearm so neatly placed and why does the scene appear to be poorly staged?
Let me be absolutely clear, I am not saying that a police officer did this. I am not accusing anyone. What I am saying is that questions like these demonstrate why this matter demands athorough forensic investigation.
I believe the crime scene must be preserved and examined with the highest level of professionalism. Every piece of evidence should be collected, every forensic test carried out, and every investigative avenue pursued. Even if our investigators require additional forensic expertise, then there should be no hesitation in seeking assistance from regional or international experts.
I have also heard reports that Mr. Scott may have been on a telephone call around the time of his death. If that is true, I hope investigators determine who he was speaking with and whether that person heard anything that may assist in establishing a clear timeline of events. Even the smallest detail could prove significant.
At the same time, I want to urge the public to exercise patience and restraint. The investigators must be allowed to do their work without harassment, intimidation, or interference. Rumours and speculation will not help this investigation, and they certainly will not help Mr. Scott’s family.
All I am asking for is a complete, independent, professional investigation that follows the evidence wherever it leads, without fear or favour..
The best way we can honour the life of Police Constable Kenrick Scott is not by rushing to judgment, but by ensuring that every legitimate question is answered, every relevant piece of evidence is examined, and that the truth, whatever it may be, is established beyond reasonable doubt.
