Understanding the Drug-Resistant Bacteria Found at MCMH

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that a drug-resistant bacterium known as Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), carrying what is called the New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) resistance mechanism, has been detected at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH).

While the name may sound alarming, health officials are stressing that the discovery does not mean the general public is at immediate increased risk. Instead, they say the cases have prompted a series of infection-control measures inside the hospital to prevent further spread.

What exactly is this bacterium?

Acinetobacter baumannii is a type of bacterium commonly found in hospital environments. It mainly affects people who are already seriously ill, especially patients in intensive care units, those on ventilators, or people recovering from major surgery according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Healthy people going about their daily lives are generally not the group most at risk.

The concern arises when this bacterium becomes resistant to several antibiotics, including carbapenems—a group of powerful medicines that doctors often reserve for treating severe infections when other antibiotics fail.

When the bacterium becomes resistant to these drugs, it is known as Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, or CRAB.

What does NDM mean?

The Ministry also confirmed that the bacterium carries the NDM resistance mechanism.

NDM stands for New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase, an enzyme that allows certain bacteria to break down many commonly used antibiotics before the medicines can work.

This makes infections much harder to treat because fewer antibiotics remain effective.

However, doctors emphasise that harder to treat does not mean impossible to treat. Treatment options still exist, although they may be more limited and may require specialist medical care.

Why is this bacterium getting so much attention?

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers CRAB one of the world’s most concerning drug-resistant bacteria and has placed it among its highest-priority pathogens for research and the development of new antibiotics.

Health experts say this is because infections caused by CRAB can be severe in vulnerable hospital patients and because the bacterium has developed resistance to many of the medicines traditionally used to treat it. Scientific studies also show that the NDM resistance gene can spread between different bacteria, increasing concerns about antimicrobial resistance if strict infection-control measures are not followed.

Is the public in danger?

According to the Ministry of Health, there is no indication that members of the public are at immediate increased risk because of the cases detected at MCMH.

Officials say the bacterium is primarily a concern within the hospital setting, particularly among patients who are already seriously ill or have weakened immune systems.

The Ministry said the detection demonstrates that surveillance systems are working as intended by identifying unusual cases early so health authorities can respond quickly.

What is being done?

The Ministry has implemented several measures aimed at limiting the spread of the bacterium within the hospital. These include:

  • Enhanced infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Continued laboratory and environmental testing.
  • Increased monitoring for antimicrobial resistance.
  • Contact tracing.
  • Investigations into possible links between the identified cases.
  • Thorough cleaning and sanitisation of hospital equipment and the environment.
  • Ongoing monitoring for additional cases.
  • Restrictions on elective surgeries.

Officials say these actions are designed to protect patients, healthcare workers and visitors while the situation is closely monitored.

A reminder about antibiotics

The Ministry also used the opportunity to remind the public that antimicrobial resistance is a growing global public health challenge.

Resistance develops when bacteria change over time and medicines that once killed them become less effective. Health experts continue to urge people to use antibiotics only when prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional and to complete the full course of treatment as directed.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environmental Health and Energy, in its August 10 press release, said it will continue working with the management and clinical teams at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital to monitor the situation and implement all necessary measures to safeguard public health.
