Fourteen-year-old Vincentian cyclist Sage J. Williams delivered another strong performance on the regional stage after finishing second in the Category 4 division at the Team Sonics Classic 2026 in Barbados.
The race, held on Sunday, July 13, attracted a large field of competitors spanning several age groups, from juvenile riders to Masters cyclists over the age of 60.
The challenging course took participants through sections of Christ Church and St. Philip, testing both endurance and race strategy.
Competing against a field made up largely of experienced adult cyclists, Williams produced a determined ride to secure the runner-up position. It was also the first time this season that the young rider did not finish on the top step of the podium.
Reflecting on the race, Williams said the course highlighted a different challenge from the terrain he has been training on in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
“The hills in SVG are short and punchy, while the incline in this race was more lengthy and gruelling,” he said.
Williams added that the experience has prompted him to adjust his training programme, with plans to focus more on longer climbs along the Leeward coast to better prepare for similar races in the future.
The promising cyclist is expected to continue his regional campaign with another event in Barbados later this month before returning home for the SVG Cycling Union/CountryMart Bicycle Festivals in Georgetown on September 27.
The SVG Cycling Union is encouraging BMX, mountain, gravel and road cyclists, from beginners to elite competitors, to take part in the festival, which organisers expect to be the largest cycling event on the national calendar this year.
