Police are investigating an incident in Ottley Hall that resulted in a 40-year-old man being shot by officers after they responded to reports of gunfire early Monday morning.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) said officers were dispatched to the area at about 2:40 a.m. after reports that gunshots had been heard.
According to the police, officers encountered a 40-year-old male resident of Ottley Hall along a roadway during their response.
The RSVGPF said that, in circumstances which remain under investigation, police discharged their firearms. The man sustained a gunshot wound as well as injuries to one of his hands.
He was taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where he received medical treatment before being discharged.
Police said investigators are examining both the reports of gunfire that prompted the response and the circumstances surrounding the subsequent encounter between officers and the man, including the discharge of police firearms.
The RSVGPF said further information will be released as the investigation continues and additional facts are verified.
No further details, including the identity of the injured man or the nature of the injuries to his hand, have been released.
