A passenger who was among those seriously injured in last week’s omnibus crash along the La Croix public road has died.
The deceased has been identified as Calvin Cockburn, 50, of Greiggs who died at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital on Wednesday (September 16), after being hospitalised following the incident.
His death comes after the September 8 death of 56-year-old Garvet Sam who died in hospital after being struck on a sidewalk in Arnos Vale while headed to work.
In the case of Calvin Cockburn and the La Croix accident, police said that the particular crash occurred at about 2:26 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, when a public transport omnibus travelling along the La Croix public road in the direction of the Mesopotamia Police Station plunged over an embankment.
According to the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), the omnibus was being driven by 59-year-old Garvin Brown of Greiggs.
Police had reported that the driver, the conductor and all passengers sustained injuries. Most of the injured were treated at the Levi Latham Health Centre and later discharged.
However, Brown and three passengers were admitted to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
Cockburn’s death marks the first fatality arising from the crash.
The omnibus sustained extensive damage.
Police have not disclosed the number of passengers who were on board at the time of the incident.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing. Authorities have not yet indicated whether Cockburn’s death will result in any changes to the ongoing investigation or possible charges.
