The Caribbean has lost one of its greatest cultural icons with the death of legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, better known to millions around the world as The Mighty Sparrow. He was 91.
Francisco died peacefully in New York on Sunday, September 27, surrounded by loved ones after a brief illness, according to a statement released by his family.
For more than six decades, The Mighty Sparrow stood at the pinnacle of Caribbean music, using his powerful voice, sharp wit and unmatched storytelling to shape the sound and identity of calypso. His songs entertained generations while also challenging political leaders, highlighting social issues and celebrating Caribbean life, earning him admiration far beyond the region.
His influence extended across the Caribbean, including St Vincent and the Grenadines, where his music became a staple of Carnival celebrations and was embraced by generations of calypso lovers.
He was born in Grenada and gained regional and international musical acclaim in Trinidad and Tobago.
In announcing his passing, the family described Francisco as far more than an entertainer. They remembered him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend whose warmth touched countless lives.
The family also shared that they find comfort in knowing that before his death, Francisco had given his life to Jesus Christ and had been baptised in the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
Plans are now being made for a public celebration of his life. The family has invited fans and well-wishers around the world to honour his memory by sharing tributes on social media while asking that their privacy be respected as they grieve.
The Mighty Sparrow leaves behind a musical legacy that helped define Caribbean culture. His timeless catalogue, fearless lyrics and unmistakable voice ensured that he became not only a calypso king, but one of the region’s most enduring cultural ambassadors.
