Vincentians will gather at the Arnos Vale Playing Field this evening for the official Independence Parade and Cultural Showcase, the centrepiece of today’s celebrations marking 47 years of independence for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The event begins at 5:00 p.m. and is organised by the National Independence Committee, which has invited the public to come out and take part.

This year’s celebrations are held under the theme “Hand in Hand, Uplifting Our Nation.” It’s a message of unity the committee hopes will carry through the evening’s programme.

The parade will bring together a military parade and a cultural showcase. In a notice to the public, the committee said the occasion is meant to honour the nation’s identity, celebrate its heritage, and reflect on the progress and achievements of the country since independence.

Expectations are high after last year’s 46th anniversary parade, held on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the same venue. That event drew thousands of spectators in the national colours, who watched the military parade, uniformed youth groups, and musical bands. Its standout moment came from the sky, when members of the Guyana Defence Force parachuted into Arnos Vale from about 8,000 feet, carrying the flags of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from Britain on October 27, 1979. Each year, the parade at Arnos Vale (previously held at Victoria Park in Kingstown) draws families, schoolchildren, and visitors dressed in blue, gold, and green, there to watch uniformed contingents march past and to enjoy displays of local culture.

Today is a public holiday, and the parade is expected to be one of the most attended events on the national calendar.

Members of the public planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early to secure good viewing spots, and to plan their travel with traffic around the Arnos Vale area in mind.

The committee is urging Vincentians at home and in the diaspora to join in the spirit of unity and national pride as the country marks 47 years of nationhood.
