Police say they are building a clearer picture of the gangs operating in St Vincent and the Grenadines, and some of that picture is coming from markings painted on buildings in communities across the country.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brenton Smith, who has responsibility for crime, told SVG TV News that investigators spotted markings on a building near the scene of the recent mass shooting in Green Hill.
Four people were killed and four others were injured in that shooting on the night of Friday, September 25.
Investigators are now working to determine whether the markings have any link to gang activity or other criminal operations.
ACP Smith said the markings are a concern, but they also help police. In his words, they give investigators an idea of “who’s who and where they are and where the gangs are”.
He described the defacing of a public building in that way as a serious matter. However, he said police were glad to have a lead on where the groups are based. He referred to two gangs known as “Six” and “Seven”, saying the markings help investigators identify “who are the six, who are the sevens”.
“So we are still investigating those matters to see exactly who might have done those and where exactly, so that we can be a bit more targeted and strategic in our approach,” the senior officer said.
ACP Smith also said 42 homicides have been recorded in the country so far this year. Of those, 39 have been classified as murders.
He spoke of the grief and pain carried by families across St Vincent and the Grenadines who have lost loved ones to violence. He also expressed confidence that investigators will soon bring whoever is responsible to justice.
Police continue to appeal to anyone with information that could assist their investigations to come forward.
