Kingstown (One News St. Vincent) – All airports and seaports in St. Vincent and the Grenadines remain open, except for Chateaubelair which is temporarily closed.
But, there is much enhanced border control and surveillance of persons with symptoms of Covid-19 and other persons of health interest, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves told the nation Wednesday night.
“The immigration officers and the health personnel at the airports and ports of entry work closely with each other on this matter” – Dr. Gonsalves said.
The Prime Minister’s statements come amidst criticism from some Vincentians who have been advocating that the borders be closed.
Several regional countries have closed their borders including Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica and others such as St. Lucia have declared states of emergencies to contain the spread of Covid-19.
While acknowledging that the virus is a serious threat, Dr. Gonsalves decried the fear and hysteria which he said has characterized much of the response to the virus, saying the human fear of Covid-19 may be far greater than the actual effect of the disease itself.
