Kingstown, St. Vincent (ONE NEWS SVG) – One of the Vice Presidents of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), St. Clair Leacock says that he has “every confidence” that the party’s candidate for the South Central Windward constituency, Israel Bruce, will win his seat.
Bruce, a first-timer, will challenge incumbent, Saboto Ceasar of the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), for the seat. Caesar first won the seat in the 2010 general election and increased his margin in 2015.
Both candidates are trained in Law.
Mr. Leacock, who was at the time speaking at a virtual rally streamed LIVE on Facebook on Monday night (September 1), said “you in South Central Windward, singularly, can help the New Democratic Party form government. Bring Israel home and we are in government two-thousand twenty”.
Leacock says he hopes the people of Higher Lowmans, where Mr. Bruce originates, understand that they have an obligation to see him through.
Since the 1979 elections, the Labour Party has won South Central Windward five (5) times (one under St. Vincent Labour Party SVLP and four under the Unity Labour Party – ULP).
The NDP won the seat on four (4) occasions since independence in 1979.
In the 2015 general election, the NDP’s candidate Addison Thomas, secured 1,888 votes, while the ULP’s Saboto Caesar won the seat, having amassed 2,476 votes. The ULP won 13 of the 16 polling divisions in the constituency.
