Dr. Friday thanks supporters, recommits to bringing change

Kingstown, St. Vincent (ONE NEWS SVG) – President of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Dr. Godwin Friday thanked his supporters for rallying with the party in the November 5, 2020, General Election.

Dr. Friday and the NDP lost the election and lost a seat they held (North Leeward), but narrowly won the popular vote, preliminary results show.

It was his first time facing a general election as leader of the party. He succeeded Arnhim Eustace as leader of the NDP in November 2016.

Mr. Eustace served as president of the NDP from October 2000 to November 2016.

In a Facebook post on his official page on Sunday, November 8, Dr. Friday said “Thanks to all of you for rallying with us throughout this difficult election. By your vote, giving the NDP and me as leader a majority of the votes cast, you made it clear that you want change and that you prefer the NDP to be our government”.

“Thank you for your confidence in me. Know that I am as determined as ever to bring about that change and deliver hope to our people. Let’s stay positive. Let’s be as committed as ever to our purpose,” he added.

Dr. Friday said that he will say more to the nation in a subsequent address.

The election defeat is the fifth consecutive defeat for the New Democratic Party (NDP), but it is the first time since 1994 that the party won the popular vote at the polls.
