Hundreds of persons in the North of the country turned up to show solidarity to the family of 12-year-old Dezy Lavia who died tragically this week.
According to a police report a tragic accident that occurred in Orange Hill at about 6:50 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023, left the 12-year-old pedal cyclist of Sandy Bay dead.
This evening (May 18), hundreds of residents of the north, mainly from Sandy Bay joined religious leaders and the family of Dezy Lavia in mourning the child’s tragic death.
Earlier this week, there was a collective outpouring of emotions by students and staff at the Sandy Bay Secondary School where Dezy was a student as they tried to come to grips with his death.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the May 14 accident.
Police say that on May 14, Motor Vehicle HV112, a Toyota Hiace owned by Larnet Ballantyne of Sandy Bay and driven by Kashaka Holder, a 38-year-old Byrea resident, struck the deceased as it headed toward Sandy Bay. He suffered multiple injuries about his body and was taken to Georgetown Medical Center before being transferred to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A postmortem examination is expected to be carried out on the body of the deceased to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Holder is assisting the police with the investigation.
