The Science Initiative for Environmental Conservation and Education (SCIENCE) has raised concerns over activities during the visit of IShowSpeed, where a live iguana was displayed and the influencer was served a meal described as iguana during the closed season.

In a press release issued on April 29, 2026, the organisation described the incident as a “clear and deliberate breach” of national wildlife protection laws, noting that the closed season for iguana runs annually from February 1 to September 30.

SCIENCE further argued that the actions represent a failure of leadership and responsibility, emphasising that all individuals, particularly those in positions of authority, are expected to uphold and enforce the laws of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The group also expressed concern that the involvement of a high-profile international influencer could undermine ongoing conservation efforts, weaken public trust in enforcement agencies, and send the wrong message regarding the protection of the country’s biodiversity.

According to the statement, the event, which was live-streamed, showed a live iguana confined in a cage while the influencer was reportedly told he was consuming wild meat identified as iguana.

SCIENCE warned that such actions contradict years of investment in conservation education and sustainable resource management.

The organisation additionally raised animal welfare concerns, noting that iguanas are diurnal and highly sensitive to stress. It said that keeping the animal in a confined space while exposing it to loud music, bright lights, and a busy environment could negatively impact its wellbeing.

SCIENCE has called for immediate accountability and appropriate enforcement action, stressing that no individual, regardless of status or platform, is above the law.

The organisation reaffirmed that protecting the nation’s natural heritage remains a non-negotiable responsibility and urged authorities to ensure that wildlife protection laws are applied consistently.
