A youth support initiative led by Vincentian-born British Army Sapper (Spr.) Morani Porter has seen the first sponsored recruit from last year’s charity effort successfully complete Phase One training with the British military
The recruit was assisted through funds raised by “Operation Walk for the Future”, a 91-kilometre endurance charity walk undertaken by Porter in St Vincent and the Grenadines on August 23 2025, which generated financial support for selected Commonwealth applicants seeking to join the United Kingdom Armed Forces.
The walk, completed in approximately 24 hours, began in Fancy at the northern end of St Vincent and ended in Richmond on the north-western side of the island. Through public support and donations, a total of £2,810 was raised.
Following the completion of the walk, an application process was opened for interested recruits seeking access to the funds. Applicants were required to complete and pass a mock assessment related to the role they intended to pursue within the British Armed Forces. From this process, several recruits were selected for sponsorship.
Nearly a year later, Porter has confirmed that the first sponsored recruit has successfully completed Phase One training, while two others are currently progressing through training at this time.
Speaking after completing training, the now-serving soldier offered words of encouragement to future recruits and young people generally: “Always keep your head up regardless and never give up. Never tell yourself you can’t do it. It’s all in the mind.”
Porter previously described the initiative as being focused on opportunity and resilience: “This walk is about more than just raising money. It’s about showing resilience, discipline, and community spirit, reminding us that with support, no obstacle is too great to overcome.”
Porter expressed sincere appreciation to all who supported the initiative and contributed towards “creating opportunities for young Vincentians.”
