The Repair Campaign has welcomed the establishment of Ghana’s Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, describing it as an important step towards strengthening international cooperation in the global movement for reparatory justice.
The announcement comes after the Government of Ghana invited the campaign’s Senior Adviser and Elder, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, to serve on the newly formed council following his participation in a high-level consultative conference in Accra in June.
According to The Repair Campaign, the council will provide high-level political guidance and strategic leadership to advance reparatory justice efforts, while strengthening cooperation between Africa, the African diaspora, including the Caribbean, and partner institutions. It is also expected to promote a coordinated global approach to implementing reparatory justice initiatives.
Dr Gonsalves, the Leader of the Opposition in St Vincent and the Grenadines and a longstanding advocate for reparatory justice, said he accepted the invitation with “a deep sense of honour and purpose”.
“It presents an important opportunity to build on the growing momentum for reparatory justice and strengthen this movement beyond CARICOM,” he said.
“I look forward to working with the Government of Ghana, fellow Council members and other stakeholders to advance a coordinated global agenda for justice and repair.”
The invitation followed the June conference in Accra, which sought to advance implementation of United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250 on the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans.
In his formal invitation, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, commended Dr Gonsalves’ “distinguished statesmanship, longstanding contribution to Caribbean integration and unwavering advocacy for reparatory justice”, adding that his experience and leadership would strengthen the council’s work.
The Repair Campaign said the initiative represents an opportunity to deepen collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean while advancing a unified international agenda for reparatory justice.
Dr Gonsalves has been one of the Caribbean’s most prominent advocates on the issue for decades, consistently calling for recognition of the enduring effects of Indigenous genocide, the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans and colonial exploitation. In 2015, he published The Case for Caribbean Reparatory Justice, outlining the historical and moral case for reparations.
Other Caribbean leaders invited to serve on the Global Advisory Council include Jamaican Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness and Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
