The circumstances surrounding the death of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) lecturer Sherefa Clouden-Gonsalves remain unclear, despite the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force confirming that her fatal injuries were sustained during an incident involving a motor vehicle at her Richmond Hill home.
In a statement issued on Monday, police said they have launched an investigation into the death of the 34-year-old teacher, who died on Saturday night after an incident at a private residence.
According to the police, officers received a report at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, and responded to the scene, where Mrs. Clouden-Gonsalves was found with injuries sustained during the incident. She was later pronounced dead by a medical practitioner.
Investigators said the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the involvement of the motor vehicle, remain under investigation. A post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.
The police statement does not explain how the incident occurred, leaving many questions unanswered.
On Saturday night, preliminary reports indicated that the vehicle involved had gone over an embankment near Mrs. Clouden-Gonsalves’ home. However, police have not confirmed those reports, nor have they released any details about the sequence of events leading to her death.
Other accounts circulating since the incident have suggested a different set of circumstances, but these have also not been confirmed by the authorities. One News SVG has therefore chosen not to publish unverified claims while the official investigation is ongoing.
Mrs. Clouden-Gonsalves’ death has deeply affected the SVGCC community, particularly at the Division of Technical and Vocational Education (DTVE), where she served as a lecturer. Students, colleagues and members of staff have paid tribute to her on social media, remembering her as a dedicated educator who touched the lives of many.
Her passing has also been mourned by members of her church and the wider community, where she was known not only for her work in education but also for her creativity as a decorator and her warm, engaging personality.
Friends and relatives have noted that the tragedy comes at an especially difficult time for her family, following the recent death of her husband’s father.
The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force extended condolences to Mrs. Clouden-Gonsalves’ family, relatives, friends, colleagues and loved ones, and said further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
