Vincentian junior cyclist Sage J. Williams continued his outstanding run of form on the Barbadian racing circuit on Sunday, claiming another convincing victory at the Golden Wheelers Criterium in St Philip, Barbados.
Williams emerged on top in the highly competitive Category 4 division after producing another disciplined performance on the demanding Marley Vale Circuit, reinforcing his status as one of the region’s rising young cycling talents.
More than 50 cyclists competed across 12 categories at the event, which was staged along East Point Road. Riders tackled the fast and testing 3.3-kilometre circuit in a race that honoured Suzanne Weekes, founder and owner of the Golden Wheelers Cycling Club, in recognition of her more than three decades of commitment to developing young cyclists in Barbados.
Having won every race he has completed this season, Williams once again demonstrated both strength and race intelligence, making a decisive break from the main pack to secure victory.
“I believe my performance was strong overall,” Williams said after the race.
“The hard work I’ve put into my training was definitely the deciding factor today. However, I know I have to keep pushing to improve my pace and stamina if I want to stay on top of the podium.”
The Vincentian rider also reflected on the setbacks he has encountered during the season, saying they have helped shape his development as a competitor.
“There are always challenges that help you grow,” he said. “I look at the races I didn’t finish due to mechanical issues or crashes not as failures, but as opportunities to learn and refine my skills. I am looking forward to the next challenge with high expectations.”
Williams’ latest success adds to what has been a remarkable campaign, with the young cyclist maintaining an unbeaten record in every race he has managed to finish despite the occasional interruption caused by crashes and mechanical problems.
He will have little time to savour his latest victory, however. Williams is scheduled to return to Barbados this weekend to compete in the Sonics Classic on Sunday, September 13, where he will again line up in the fiercely contested Category 4 field.
His consistent performances continue to shine a positive spotlight on Vincentian cycling and underline his growing potential on the regional stage.
