A magical cat? What is Derron Rouse’s new song really about?

There has been mixed reaction on social media over a new song released by Soca artiste Derron “Magikal” Rouse.

The song, entitled “My Gyal Cat” was released on Magikal Music’s YouTube page on January 6, 2023 on the “Ram Kram Riddim.”

The main catchline in the song by the footballer turned artiste says, “Dem say blood thicker than water, but blood don’t thicker than my gyal cat.”

It is this catchline that has given rise to mixed views on the song by the 2019 Vincy Soca Monarch winner.

Some have suggested that the song uses double entendre, others have said it’s a vulgar song, while some have said it’s all in the Carnival fun. Some people have called for an outright ban of the song from the airwaves.

“My gyal cat thick and it big and fat,” is one of the main lines of contention where some persons have accused Magikal of veering away from the old school ways of writing calypso and soca and embracing the trend of lewdness in writing.

Two other cat songs that embrace the old school way of writing calypso and soca are “Pussman” by Touch, and “Ah fraid pussy bite me” by Mighty Sparrow. The old school way has a story line that craftily employs double entendre.

It is not clear, however, if Magikal wrote the song.

Listen the song here and tell us what you think.
