A fire that broke out on Tuesday night near the headquarters of the New Democratic Party was quickly brought under control, according to eyewitnesses.
The incident occurred behind the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation “Hugo Chávez FrĂas”, which is located adjacent to the governing party’s headquarters. A mechanic workshop also operates in the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that an individual cleaning the surroundings, including a large drain reportedly blocked with leaves and debris, used petrol to ignite the waste as part of the clean-up effort.
Witnesses said the resulting flare-up produced a loud blast-like sound that rattled windows in nearby buildings and alarmed some residents and nearby occupants.
Members of the Fire Brigade of the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force responded to the scene. However, the fire had reportedly already been contained by the time officers arrived.
Sources familiar with the matter said the situation was brought under control and no injuries were reported.
