Divers and marine operators in St Vincent and the Grenadines are now able to have scuba tanks tested locally following the establishment of a hydrostatic testing service, a development expected to reduce both overseas shipping costs and turnaround times for cylinder certification.

The service is being offered by Serenity Dive at Blue Lagoon Hotel and Marina.

Hydrostatic testing is a safety requirement used to assess the structural integrity of pressurised cylinders, including scuba tanks. It is typically conducted at regular intervals, commonly every five years, in accordance with international safety standards.

Previously, cylinder owners in St Vincent and the Grenadines were required to ship tanks to other countries for testing, a process that could result in delays and additional logistical costs before equipment was returned.

Owner Vaughn Martin said the absence of a local facility had been a longstanding issue for users of pressurised cylinders.

“For many years, local tank owners had to send their cylinders overseas for testing,” Martin said. “Being able to provide this service here at home is something I’m extremely proud of.”

The facility was developed with support from a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) grant, which assisted with equipment procurement and technical training.

Martin said the service will be used by a range of stakeholders, including recreational divers and commercial operators.

“Our goal is to continue investing in services that support the diving community and contribute to the growth of the marine sector in St Vincent and the Grenadines,” he said.

The introduction of local hydrostatic testing is expected to improve access to certification services and reduce the need for overseas shipment of cylinders.

It also adds a specialised inspection capability within the country’s marine services sector.
