Searchlight newspaper will publish its final print edition on Friday, September 25, bringing to a close 31 years of continuous publication as its parent company reviews the future of the long-running media operation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Interactive Media Limited said the newspaper will also pause its digital editions while the Board of Directors undertakes what it described as a fundamental reassessment of the Searchlight operation and its long-term direction.

The company said the decision reflects the significant challenges facing the global news industry, including declining print circulation and advertising revenue, rising operating costs, and the continued shift of audiences and advertisers to digital platforms.

Founded in 1995, Searchlight has been one of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ best-known news organisations, providing coverage of national issues and events for readers at home and across the diaspora.

Over the past three decades, the publication expanded beyond its weekly print edition by developing a digital presence through its website, social media platforms and electronic editions in response to changing audience habits.

Interactive Media Limited said its Board believes the organisation must now reassess how it can best respond to the realities of today’s media landscape, including opportunities presented by digital media.

The company acknowledged that the decision would affect employees, readers, advertisers, subscribers, vendors and other long-standing partners, and expressed regret for the disruption it will cause.

Interactive Media Limited also thanked its employees, contributors, readers, advertisers, subscribers and supporters for their commitment over the newspaper’s 31-year history.

The company said further information on the future direction of the Searchlight operation will be shared as decisions are made.
