The Tobago Cays Marine Park – TCMP says it has placed a ban on all anchoring in the Petit Tabac area due to damage to coral reefs.
“In recent times we have noticed significant damages [sic] to corals caused by the anchoring of yachts in and around the Petit Tabac area,” the organization stated in a press release today (February 20).
“Considering this, the Tobago Cays Marine Park has placed a ban on ALL anchoring in that area with immediate effect,” the release stated.
“We encourage all yachts to anchor within the lagoon area of the park and use their dinghies or a local water taxi to ferry passengers who wish to visit Petit Tabac,” release further stated.
Petit Tabac is one of the cays that make up the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected marine area in the Southern Grenadines.
The area is known for its turquoise waters, picturesque scenery, and conservation work. It is frequently visited by thousands of people each year. Yachts also anchor at the different parts of the park, providing a safe stay to scuba divers and other enthusiasts to enjoy the park.
A scene in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean film was also filmed in the area.
