Kingstown, St. Vincent (ONE NEWS SVG) – North Leeward is preparing for the possibility of an emergency evacuation.
North Leeward is in the Red Zone and is highly likely to be directly affected if there is an explosive eruption of La Soufriere volcano.
On Wednesday, December 30, 2020, an inaugural meeting was held to address issues relating to a national emergency plan and the overall preparedness in North Leeward.
The meeting was hosted by Member of Parliament (MP) for North Leeward, Carlos James.
Emergency first responders, community leaders, medical personnel, staff from Bragsa, Vinlec, Church leaders, Red Cross and other NGO’s participated in the emergency management meeting.
On December 29, 2020, the La Soufriere volcano erupted effusively, with magma coming out of the earth and forming a new dome in the crater.
In the 2012 Population and Housing Census, nearly 6,000 persons resided in the Chateaubelair housing district.
