I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the healthcare services being provided on the island of Canouan and to call attention to circumstances surrounding the recent death of my cousin.

On the night before his passing, my cousin was taken to the clinic suffering from significant pain. While he was clearly unwell, none of us expected that by the following day he would no longer be alive. His death has left our family devastated and searching for answers.

One of the issues that has caused considerable concern is the response of a nurse who resides in government housing located on the clinic premises. According to information shared with our family, she declined to assist with placing my cousin on intravenous fluids while awaiting the arrival of another nurse, reportedly stating that she was not on duty at the time. Given the limited healthcare resources available on a small island such as Canouan, many residents find it troubling that assistance may not have been provided in what appeared to be an urgent situation.

Our concern extends beyond this single incident. Many residents have expressed frustration over what they perceive as ongoing deficiencies in healthcare delivery on the island. In a community where access to medical services is already limited, the public relies heavily on the commitment, responsiveness, and competence of the healthcare professionals assigned to serve us.

We are also concerned about the overall state of medical care being provided and whether the clinic is adequately equipped and staffed to meet the needs of the population. These concerns deserve careful review by the relevant authorities.

Many residents have also expressed concerns about the doctor’s ability to effectively meet the demands of providing medical care on the island. While we recognize and appreciate her years of service, there have been repeated observations that raise questions about whether the physical and professional demands of the position can still be carried out effectively. Residents have noted instances where she has spoken about her own health challenges, difficulties performing certain duties such as house calls, and other limitations that may affect the level of care patients receive. These concerns are not raised out of disrespect, but out of a genuine desire to ensure that the people of Canouan have access to healthcare services that are adequately staffed and capable of meeting the community’s needs.

This letter is not intended to assign blame before the facts are fully established. Rather, it is a call for transparency, accountability, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding my cousin’s death and the quality of healthcare services available to the people of Canouan.

The residents of Canouan deserve confidence in their healthcare system. Families should not be left wondering whether more could have been done for their loved ones during a medical emergency.

We respectfully ask the media to bring attention to this matter and encourage the appropriate authorities to conduct a comprehensive and independent review.
