Kingstown, St. Vincent (ONE NEWS SVG) – After leading his country to victory in a bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has created history again by winning a fifth consecutive term in office.
According preliminary results from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Electoral Office, the Prime Minister was able to hold on to the eight (8) seats his party held in Parliament, leading up to the November 5, General Elections.
He also gained North Leeward, narrowly, as Carlos James wrestled the seat from the incumbent – Roland ‘Patel’ Matthews of the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), by some 7 votes.
Matthews won the seat against James in 2015 by 12 votes.
Polster, Peter Wickham says Prime Minister Gonsalves’ fifth-term victory is a first in the region.
The opposition New Democratic Party – NDP led by Dr. Godwin Friday managed to regain six (6) of the 15 electoral seats they held before the elections.
Gonsalves’ victory means the country is likely to maintain relations with Taiwan, as opposed to Mainland China.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines will also not likely have a Citizenship by Investment Program – a proposal by the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), on which there was much debate.
Investments in tourism are expected to continue apace, including construction of Royal Mills Hotel, Sandals Beaches Resort, Marriot Inn, and Black Sands Resort, among others.
